Maria Anton, editor of the Irvine, Calif.-based publication, says she, a core of staff of three and several assistants begin each July, by sending out questionnaires to all 2,000 franchises in their database...By mid-summer, Ms. Anotn and her staff are pouring through piles of documents from those who have responded, giving each scores for objective factors like financial stability, growth rate, franchisee termination rate, whether they provide financial help to their franchisees and whether they're involved in litigation."
